HIGHSCOPE

At B.smart we implement the Highscope method in our classrooms.

We are partners with Highscope Portugal. Based on the work of child psychologist Jean Piaget our method provides engaging, developmentally appropriate activities that encourage children to become confident, competent, life-long learners.

Our indoor and outdoor environments are designed to encourage experimentation.

Our activities are designed to encourage children to dive into play rather than waiting for directions. Teachers plan for a range of developmental abilities and strive to provide varying levels of challenge to meet childrens individual needs. Teachers also use the problem-solving approach with the children in their classroom when children are negotiating about materials and space.

We plan our program based on the HighScope Key Developmental Indicators (KDIs). These activities will vary from group to group based on interest and developmental levels. However, there are certain activities that you are likely to see at all of our centers:

  • Children go outside every day, weather permitting.
  • Children listen to stories every day.
  • Children sing and listen to music every day.
  • Children participate in the work aspects of group life: planning, setting up, and cleaning up activities; recycling.
  • Children care for living things: plants, gardens, and animals, as is developmentally appropriate.
